Word Race › Game modes
Four ways to play Wordle against friends
Every mode uses the same Wordle rules: five-letter words, six tries, green, yellow and grey tiles. What changes is how you win. The host picks the mode in the room before the game starts.
| Mode | Best for | Default settings |
|---|---|---|
| Marathon | Any group; rewards solving in few guesses | 15 words, 10 minutes |
| Race | Fast typists; first to finish wins | 15 words, 10 minutes |
| Survival | Tense games; one miss and you are out | 15 words, 10 minutes |
| Blitz | Everyone on the same word at the same moment | 15 rounds, 90 seconds each |
Marathon: most points wins
Everyone gets the same pool of words in the same order and works through it at their own pace before the shared timer runs out. Each solved word scores 7 minus the guesses you used: 6 points for a first-try solve, 1 point on the sixth try, nothing for a miss. Speed matters because the clock stops everyone, but a careful player who solves in three can beat a fast one who needs five.
Tie-breaks: points, then words solved, then fewer guesses in total, then whoever solved their last word earlier.
Try: 15 words in 10 minutes for a relaxed game, or 10 words in 5 minutes for a quick one.
Race: first to finish wins
The same pool, but the ranking is about getting through it. Whoever solves the most words wins, and between players with the same count, whoever got there first. A missed word is gone, so a wild guess to save time can cost you.
Tie-breaks: words solved, then the time you reached that count, then fewer guesses.
Try: 10 words with a generous 15-minute limit, so the race is decided by speed rather than the clock.
Survival: one miss and you are out
Keep solving words until you fail one. Using all six tries without solving it, or skipping it, ends your game, and you watch the rest from the leaderboard. The winner is whoever got furthest.
Tie-breaks: words solved, then fewer guesses, then whoever got there first.
Try: a long pool (30 words or more) and a long time limit, so it ends by people going out rather than the timer.
Blitz: same word, same moment
The whole room plays one word at a time. Each round has its own timer, and the round ends early once everyone has solved or used their six tries. Then the word is shown to everyone for five seconds with each player's result, and the next round starts. You score 7 minus your guesses, plus a bonus of 3, 2 or 1 for being first, second or third to solve it.
Tie-breaks: points, then rounds won (first to solve), then less total time spent solving, then fewer guesses.
Try: 10 rounds of 90 seconds. Drop to 45 seconds once everyone is warmed up.
For every mode
- Rooms hold up to 30 players, and people can join after the game has started.
- Answers come from about 1,000 everyday words, and guesses must be real English words. A rejected guess does not cost a try.
- When the game ends, the results show every word and each player's tries and time on it. The host can play again with the same settings in one tap.
