How to play Wordle with friends

Word Race is Wordle for a group: everyone in a room guesses the same five-letter words at the same time, and a live leaderboard shows who is ahead. Here are the rules.

Guessing a word

You have six tries to guess each five-letter word. Type a real English word and press Enter. Each letter then turns a colour:

CRANE

CRANE against the answer TRACE: R, A and E are in the right places, C is in TRACE but elsewhere, N is not in it.

Repeated letters are matched one at a time. If the answer is ROBOT and you guess FLOOR, the second O is green (right place), the first O is yellow (ROBOT has a second O elsewhere), and R is yellow. If you type a letter more times than it appears, the extra copies are grey.

A guess that is not a real English word is rejected with "Not a real English word" and does not use up a try. The on-screen keyboard colours letters as you learn about them, so you can see at a glance what is left.

Rooms

  1. Create a room from the home page. The person who creates it is the host.
  2. Share it. Tap Share link, or read out the five-character code (it never uses 0, O, 1, I or L, so it is easy to say). Friends open the link, type a name and they are in.
  3. The host sets up the game: the mode, how many words (1 to 50, 15 by default) and the time limit (1 to 60 minutes), or for Blitz the number of rounds and the seconds per round.
  4. Start. A three-second countdown, then everyone gets the first word at once.

Anyone can join a game that has already started; they begin at the first word with the time that is left. If your connection drops or you refresh the page, you rejoin as the same player with your progress kept. The host can end a game early, hand the host role to someone else or remove a player.

Scoring and winning

Everyone gets the same words in the same order. In Marathon, Race and Survival you move to the next word as soon as you solve one (or use all six tries). You can also skip a word you are stuck on; it counts as missed.

ModePointsRanking, then tie-breaks
Marathon6 for a first-try solve, down to 1 on the sixth trypoints → words solved → fewer guesses → solved their last word earlier
RaceWords solvedwords solved → got there first → fewer guesses
SurvivalWords solved until the first misswords solved → fewer guesses → got there first
Blitz7 minus your guesses, plus 3, 2 or 1 for the first three to solve the roundpoints → rounds won → less total solve time → fewer guesses

Players who are still level after every tie-break share the place. At the end, the results show the final ranking, every word, and how many tries each player took on each one.

Fair play

The words are picked and every guess is checked on the server. Your browser only receives a word after you have finished it, so there is nothing to find by opening the developer tools. Your friends see the colours of your latest guess on the leaderboard, never the letters.
